How to Sell on TikTok Shop in 2026: Setup, Fees & Creators

How to Sell on TikTok Shop in 2026: Setup, Fees & Creators

To sell on TikTok Shop in 2026, register in TikTok Shop Seller Center, pass identity and business verification, list products that can be shown on video, and get those products into creators’ videos and LIVE streams. Opening a shop costs nothing, there is no follower minimum, and TikTok takes a referral fee only when something sells. The setup takes a day or two. The selling takes a system.

Signup is not the hard part. What decides whether a shop makes money is fees math before launch, shipping discipline after launch, and a creator plan that does not depend on your own follower count.

Why TikTok Shop deserves a serious look right now

Momentum Works and Tabcut’s report TikTok Shop in the U.S. 2025 put US gross merchandise value at $15.1 billion in 2025, up 68% from about $9 billion in 2024. Short-form video still drives half of US sales, the Shop tab accounts for 36%, and LIVE has grown to 14%.

But read the rest of that report: it counts 803,500 US stores and 15.4 million influencers — and notes that more than half of those stores recorded no sales at all, while just over 2,000 stores passed $1 million in GMV. TikTok Shop is a big market with a brutal middle. A listing alone is not a strategy.

We have seen this split up close in our work with small sellers. The shops that stall listed everything they sell, waited for the algorithm to notice, and called it a launch. The shops that move treat the first month as a creator-recruiting campaign with a shop attached.

Before you apply: the eligibility checklist

You need to be 18 or older, based in a supported market — the US, UK, and parts of Europe and Southeast Asia — with a business address in that market. You do not need 1,000 followers — that number belongs to affiliate creators, not sellers.

  • A government photo ID for the account holder
  • Business registration documents, if you are registering as a business rather than an individual
  • Tax information — an EIN or SSN for US sellers, depending on your business type
  • A bank account in exactly the same legal name as the registered business
  • A warehouse or ship-from address and a return address

Setting up the shop without the rejection loop

Signup runs through seller.tiktok.com, or seller-us.tiktok.com for US sellers. Sign up with a TikTok account or an email and phone number not already tied to another shop, pick your region and business type, and work through verification.

The rejection loop we see most often has one cause: names that do not match exactly across documents. Your ID says one version, your bank account another, your business registration a third — and the review team sends it back. Type everything exactly as it appears on the documents, scan clearly, and do not submit an expired ID. Approval usually lands within one to three business days once the documents are clean. After approval, link one TikTok account as your shop’s official account — the account whose videos and LIVE streams can tag your products.

The real cost math, done before you price anything

TikTok Shop charges no monthly fee and no listing fee. The published standard referral fee is 6% of each completed order in most US categories, with 5% for some jewelry and pre-owned categories. It is calculated on what the customer paid plus any TikTok-funded discount, minus tax — and it already covers payment processing.

That 6% is not your all-in cost. Run the full stack on a $30 product before you set a price:

  • Referral fee at 6%: $1.80
  • Creator commission at 15%: $4.50
  • Product cost plus shipping, say $12.00
  • What remains before returns and ads: $11.70

Push the creator commission to 25% to win a bigger creator, and the remainder drops to $8.70. Add a return, and TikTok refunds the referral fee minus a refund administration fee of 20% of that fee, capped at $5 per SKU. Sellers who price from the referral fee alone discover their margin problem in week three, when the first creator payouts and returns land together. Our rule: if the math leaves under $5 per order after a realistic commission, do not launch that product — raise the price, bundle it, or pick another.

Listing products that can actually be shown on video

TikTok matches products to people who were not searching — that flips the usual listing logic. A product that needs a paragraph to explain itself starts at a disadvantage; a product that can be demonstrated in fifteen seconds — applied, worn, opened, cleaned, cooked with — starts ahead.

For each listing, lead with the demonstration, not the spec sheet. Show the product solving one visible problem; put size, material, and box contents in the listing text. If you sell print-on-demand, do not let AI mockups be your only imagery: our piece on Printful’s free AI mockups explains why three honest real photos still matter — color and scale lies are what turn a viral video into a return spike.

The bad practice to avoid here is listing your whole catalog on day one. Launch with three to five products that demo well and expand from proof. Fifty untested listings do not give you fifty chances. They give you fifty listings nobody sees.

Getting sales: your videos, LIVE, and creators

Sales on TikTok Shop come from three places, and you need at least two of them working:

Your own videos. Post three to five product videos a week: show the product in use, answer objections in comments, tag the product.

LIVE selling. LIVE is now 14% of US TikTok Shop GMV and climbing, per the report linked above. It suits products with questions attached — sizing, shades, how it works. Go live on a schedule, pin the product, and answer live.

Affiliate creators. This is the engine for sellers without an audience. You set a commission per product, creators add it to their showcase, and they earn only when they sell. Open collaboration lets any eligible creator pick up your product at your posted rate; targeted collaboration is an invite to a specific creator, usually at a higher rate, sometimes with a free sample. Start open to find who can actually sell your product, then move budget to targeted deals with the winners.

Samples are the unglamorous part. Budget product plus shipping per creator seeded; many never post. Seed ten, get three videos, keep the one creator who converts. We have watched sellers send thirty samples, get two videos, and declare the affiliate program dead — their demo was not filmable, or their commission too low. Fix one before judging the channel. Paid ads then amplify what already works — our guide to setting up your first TikTok Ads campaign covers the structure: boost the video that already sold.

How TikTok decides who sees your products

Followers are not the distribution engine here — video performance is. TikTok weighs watch time, shares, comments, saves, product-link clicks, and click-to-order conversion, which is why a small shop with one strong demo can outsell a big account with a weak one. That has a practical consequence for listings: the Shop tab is its own search surface. Lead titles with the term buyers actually type, use a grid image that wins the tap, and attach a video to the listing itself — a listing without a video is a product nobody can see working, and on this platform that is most of the sale.

GMV Max: the ad format for scaling, not testing

GMV Max is TikTok Shop’s automated ad product: you feed it the videos already converting organically and it shifts budget toward them. Treat organic as the testing layer and paid as the scaling layer. Boosting a video nobody has bought from yet is how new sellers burn budget — the ad system amplifies what works, it does not fix what does not. Run creators and your own videos first, find the one or two with real orders attached, and only then put GMV Max behind them.

Shipping and payouts without tanking your shop health

TikTok Shop’s shipping rule catches new sellers more than any fee. Orders must be in the carrier’s hands within two business days. No tracking within five business days means an automatic cancellation. One viral video can bring a wave of orders in hours — if packing cannot handle it, the gift becomes a penalty.

On payouts, the clock starts at delivery, not at the order date, and your tier decides the wait: Introductory 31 days for new shops, Standard 8 days once you have a track record, Accelerated 5 days, and Express 1 day for shops with a Shop Performance Score of 4.0 or higher. TikTok also holds part of each delivered order in reserve for 30 days against returns, and bank transfer takes another 1–3 business days after a payout is sent. Do not build a cash-flow plan that assumes next-day money — plan inventory buying around a weeks-long gap while you are new. Later, Early Settlement (Seller Center → Finance → Capital) can advance up to 90% of GMV the day after shipment for eligible shops — generally 6+ months of activity, stable performance, no fraud history — for a 0.5–1% fee that is non-refundable even if the order is later returned.

One honest caveat: we are not sure yet whether the 8% referral rate some seller blogs reported for many categories in August 2026 will stick. TikTok’s published table still shows 6% for most categories. Check your category’s rate inside Seller Center before pricing, and re-check quarterly.

Account Health Rating: the score that can close your shop

In mid-2026 TikTok moved US sellers from the old violation-points system to the Account Health Rating (AHR). Every shop starts at 200 points on a 0–1,000 scale. You earn points back — 4 points per 200 completed orders, up to 20 a week, plus policy quizzes in Seller Center — and violations deduct points on a rolling 180-day window. The thresholds that matter: at 150 points, warnings and 7-day listing and campaign limits; at 100, 14-day restrictions; at 50, 28-day severe restrictions; at 0, possible permanent deactivation. Four metrics drive most deductions: Late Dispatch Rate above 4%, Valid Tracking Rate below 95%, Seller-Fault Cancellation Rate above 2.5%, and On-Time Delivery Rate below 80%.

Do not confuse AHR with the Shop Performance Score. AHR measures policy compliance; the Shop Performance Score measures service against other sellers in your category, and TikTok added an After-Sales Handling Time metric to it in July 2026. Check both in the weekly review, not only when a violation notice arrives — by then the restriction is already priced in.

One more new-seller trap: new shops start on a probationary tier with daily caps, reported at 50 orders and 100 listings a day. A viral video in week one can hit a ceiling you did not know existed, so check your current limits in Seller Center before you push a video hard.

Fulfillment: self-ship, Fulfilled by TikTok, or Amazon MCF

FAQ

Do I need followers to sell on TikTok Shop? No. Sellers need no minimum follower count. The 1,000 and 5,000 follower thresholds apply to affiliate creators, not shop owners.

How much does it cost to open a TikTok Shop? Nothing upfront — no monthly fee, no listing fee. You pay a 6% referral fee on most US orders when something sells, plus your creator commission and fulfillment costs.

How long does approval take? Usually one to three business days with clean documents. Rejections are almost always document problems: mismatched names, blurry scans, or expired IDs.

Is TikTok Shop better than selling on my own website? It is better for discovery and worse for ownership. TikTok finds buyers who were not looking for you; your own website gives you the customer list and repeat purchases. Our comparison of TikTok Shop vs. running ads to your own website lays out where each one wins — the sellers we see doing best use TikTok Shop to find buyers and their website to keep them.

Can I sell on TikTok Shop without making videos?

Yes, through affiliate creators — they make the content, you handle listings, samples, and fulfillment. The tradeoff is commission on every creator sale and less control over how the product is presented. You still need a video attached to each listing for the Shop tab itself, so “no videos” really means “no videos by you.”

What products are prohibited or need extra approval?

Regulated categories — supplements, cosmetics with strong claims, medical devices, and similar — need documentation or approval before they list, and some products are prohibited outright. Check Seller Center’s prohibited and restricted lists before you buy stock. A rejected listing after you bought inventory is the expensive way to learn the rules.
