How to Set Up Your First TikTok Ads Campaign
TikTok Ads Manager borrows a lot of its structure from Facebook’s, which makes it approachable if you’ve run Meta campaigns before — but the creative rules are different enough that a straight copy-paste of a Facebook ad into TikTok usually underperforms. Here’s the setup process end to end.
If the target market is Pakistan, India, or Southeast Asia specifically, read our TikTok Ads in Asia guide alongside this one — the core setup below still applies, but COD-driven conversion tracking and account verification work differently enough to matter before launching a first campaign there.
Step 0: Link a Real Account First
Before building anything, make sure your ad account is tied to an actual TikTok Business account with a real handle and profile, not a generic advertiser identity — TikTok has been phasing out that option entirely, and campaigns built without a linked account are increasingly getting blocked at approval. Starting correctly here means never having to deal with that transition later.
Step 1: Campaign Structure
Same discipline as any platform: build in paused state, campaign first, then ad group, then ads. Activate in sequence, check results after each step.
- Campaign objective: Conversions (if your pixel/events are set up) or Traffic for an early test with no conversion data yet
- Budget: Start at the platform minimum per ad group (check current minimums in Ads Manager, they change) — TikTok’s algorithm needs a real number of daily events to optimize against, so underfunding a test wastes the learning period more than it saves money. Our TikTok Ads budget guide covers exactly how much total spend you need before the results mean anything, and how to scale once a test works
Step 2: Targeting
Start broad, the same principle that works on Facebook: TikTok’s algorithm generally finds your buyers faster with a wide starting audience than a narrowly guessed one.
- Location: Your actual serviceable market — don’t guess broader than where you can realistically fulfill orders or deliver the service
- Age: Match your actual customer base; don’t default to TikTok’s younger-skewing reputation if your product’s buyers are older — check your existing customer data first
- Interests/behaviors: Use sparingly at first; an overly narrow interest stack early starves the algorithm of the volume it needs to learn
Step 3: The Creative Rule That Actually Matters
This is where TikTok most differs from Facebook: a polished, obviously “produced” ad underperforms a native-feeling video shot on a phone. Viewers scroll past anything that visually announces itself as an ad within the first second.
- Hook in the first 1-2 seconds — a question, a bold claim, or a visual pattern interrupt, not a logo intro
- Native aspect ratio (9:16, full vertical screen) — a horizontal or square video shot for another platform reads as an ad immediately
- Captions burned into the video — a large share of viewers watch with sound off
- Show the product being used in the first few seconds, not explained in voiceover first
Step 4: Pixel and Events Setup
Install the TikTok Pixel on every page, the same non-negotiable step covered in our Facebook Pixel and Conversions API guide — the underlying reason is identical: without it, the algorithm has no signal for who’s actually converting, and optimization can’t work. TikTok also offers Events API (their server-side option) for the same reason Meta’s Conversions API matters — browser tracking loss affects every platform, not just one. Our TikTok Pixel and Events API guide covers pairing the two properly, checking match quality, and the mistake of setting this up once and never re-checking it.
Step 5: Activation and Early Monitoring
- Activate the campaign
- Activate the ad group
- Activate individual ads
Give it 24-48 hours before judging results — TikTok’s learning phase needs real delivery data, and killing an ad group after three hours of spend tells you nothing reliable.
Getting the Script Itself Right
Everything above is about format and setup — the actual words in the first few seconds matter just as much. Our guide to writing TikTok ad scripts covers the hook, structure, and pacing that keep someone watching past the first second.
Spark Ads: An Alternative Worth Testing Alongside Standard Ads
Beyond a standard ad built from scratch in Ads Manager, TikTok’s Spark Ads format lets an existing organic post (from the brand’s own account or a creator’s, with permission) be boosted directly as an ad, keeping its existing likes, comments, and share count visible. This tends to read as more trustworthy than a standard ad specifically because it carries genuine social proof and doesn’t look freshly manufactured for advertising — worth testing as a second format alongside standard ads rather than choosing one exclusively.
New Account Spending Limits
New ad accounts commonly have lower daily spending caps than established ones, which can quietly bottleneck an otherwise well-optimized campaign that’s ready to scale faster than the account limit allows. Checking the account’s current spending limit in Ads Manager before assuming a stalled scale-up is a targeting or budget problem saves time chasing the wrong fix — sometimes the fix is simply requesting a limit increase, not changing anything about the campaign itself.
Captions Matter as Much as the Video
The on-screen caption and the post caption both function as part of the hook, not an afterthought added after the video’s finished — a caption that poses a question or states a specific, concrete benefit tends to stop the scroll more effectively than a generic product description. Treating caption writing with the same care as the video itself, rather than filling it in last, is an easy way to improve performance without touching the creative production process at all.
A Common Mistake
Running the exact same creative that works on Facebook, unedited, on TikTok. Even a strong-performing Facebook video usually needs re-cutting for native aspect ratio and a faster hook — the audiences scroll at different speeds and expect different pacing.
