eBay Fee Calculator

This ebay fee calculator takes a sale's real numbers — price, shipping charged, sales tax, your category — and returns what eBay keeps, what you keep, and the margin left after your item cost. No more pricing from the item price alone and discovering the fee math later.

The formula

eBay's final value fee applies to the full amount the buyer pays: FVF = (Item price + Shipping charged + Sales tax) × category rate. On top of that comes a per-order fee — $0.40 when the order total is over $10, $0.30 when it is $10 or less. If you run promoted listings, that rate applies to the item price plus shipping on sales the ad drives; the international fee, when it applies, is 1.65% of the full sale amount. Add all four and you get the total eBay takes from the sale.

A worked example

Sell a $100 item, charge $10 shipping, and $8 sales tax is collected. The fee base is $118. At the most-categories rate of 13.6%, the final value fee is $118 × 0.136 = $16.05. The order is over $10, so add the $0.40 per-order fee: total eBay fees of $16.45. You keep $118 − $16.45 = $101.55 before your own costs. If the item cost you $40, net profit is $61.55 and the margin on the $118 sale is 52.2%. The example most sellers get wrong is the base: price the fee on $100 alone and you undercount by $2.45 on this one sale — small once, real across a hundred sales.

Insertion fees, separately

Your first 250 listings each month are free in most categories; after that, each new listing costs $0.35. This calculator covers per-sale fees only, because insertion fees depend on your listing volume, not the sale. If you regularly list past 250 a month, treat $0.35 per listing as a fixed monthly cost on top of the numbers above.

One honest caveat: category rates vary, and eBay revises its fee schedule. The rates here — 13.6% most categories, 15.3% Books, Movies & Music, 15% Jewelry & Watches — match eBay's US fee pages as checked in October 2026. Before pricing a thin-margin item, confirm your exact category rate in eBay Seller Hub; a single wrong percentage point on a $500 sale is $5 gone.

Frequently asked questions

What is eBay's final value fee?

For most categories it is 13.6% of the total sale amount — item price plus shipping charged to the buyer plus sales tax — plus a $0.40 per-order fee on orders over $10 ($0.30 on orders of $10 or less). Books, Movies & Music are 15.3% and Jewelry & Watches 15%.

Why does eBay charge a fee on sales tax?

Since 2021, eBay's final value fee applies to the full amount the buyer pays, including shipping and sales tax. That is why a $100 item with $10 shipping and $8 tax is charged on $118, not $100.

What about insertion fees?

Your first 250 listings each month are free in most categories. After that, each new listing costs $0.35. This calculator covers per-sale fees; if you list beyond 250 a month, add $0.35 per listing to your costs.

Do promoted listings fees stack on top of the final value fee?

Yes. The promoted listings fee is a percentage you choose, charged on the sale price when the item sells through your promoted placement — on top of the regular final value fee and per-order fee.

What is the 1.65% international fee?

When a buyer pays with a method or currency outside the US, eBay adds an international fee of 1.65% of the total sale amount. Toggle it on here if you sell to international buyers.

Do all categories pay the same rate?

No. Most categories pay 13.6%, but rates vary — Books, Movies & Music pay 15.3%, Jewelry & Watches 15%, and some specialty categories differ further. Check your exact category in eBay Seller Hub before pricing on a thin margin.
