How to Start Earning From Freelancing — A Beginner's Guide

Starting freelancing sounds simple, but in practice it demands a lot of patience — especially in the first few months. This guide covers the basics beginners often skip.

Step 1: Pick One Skill, Not Everything

The most common beginner mistake: listing 4–5 skills on one profile (graphic design, writing, video editing, all of it). Clients trust that kind of profile less.

A better approach: pick one skill you’re already somewhat comfortable with (or ready to learn), and focus on it alone until you have 5–10 completed projects.

Step 2: Choose a Platform

  • Fiverr: An easier entry point for beginners, gig-based system
  • Upwork: More professional clients, but requires writing proposals and spending connects
  • Freelancer.com: Bidding-based, with heavier competition

Whichever platform you use, set up your account with honest information — fake reviews or a fake portfolio are the most common reason accounts get banned.

Step 3: Build a Portfolio or Sample Work

If you haven’t landed a client yet, create 2–3 self-made sample projects to show on your profile. This carries nearly the same weight as real client work, as long as the quality is genuinely good.

Step 4: Pricing — Too Low and Too High Are Both Mistakes

Pricing too low attracts cheap clients who demand endless revisions. Pricing too high makes a new account invisible. Take your first 5–10 projects slightly below market rate, then raise prices gradually as reviews come in.

Step 5: How to Receive Payment

Direct international bank transfers are difficult in most Asian countries, so most freelancers rely on:

  • Payoneer — connects directly with most platforms (Fiverr, Upwork)
  • Wise (formerly TransferWise) — lower conversion fees, multi-currency account

Before setting up a payment method, always check your platform’s official payment documentation, since supported methods can vary by country.

Avoiding Scams

  • Never accept payment outside the platform because it’s offered as “cheaper fees” — doing so forfeits your buyer protection
  • Avoid clients who ask for free “sample work” without any paid agreement
  • If an offer looks unusually good with no verification involved, treat it with suspicion

Consistency matters more than anything in freelancing — the first month may be slow, but the more authentic and specific your profile is, the faster trust builds.
