How to Research Winning Products Using Google Trends
Before launching a new product, the biggest risk is misjudging demand. Google Trends is a free tool that helps validate demand to a meaningful degree — before you spend money on inventory or ads.
What Google Trends Actually Shows
The tool shows how much a search term is being searched over time, on a relative scale of 0–100. This lets you see:
- Whether interest in a product is rising, falling, or stable
- Whether there’s a seasonal pattern (like demand only in winter)
- How interest compares across different regions
Practical Use: Validating a Product
- Search the product’s generic name in Google Trends (not a brand name — a category name, like “wireless earbuds” rather than a specific brand)
- Set the time range to at least 12 months so seasonal patterns show up
- If the trend is consistently upward or stable, that’s a good sign
- If the trend is dropping sharply, it may be a dying trend — launching now is risky
Comparing Regions
If you’re considering selling across multiple Asian countries, use the “Compare by region” feature — sometimes a product trends in one country but not another. This helps you focus ad budget on the right market.
Pull Ideas From “Related Queries”
Below the trend chart is a “Related queries” section — it shows what else people are searching alongside that product. It’s useful for finding new product angles or complementary products.
Keep the Limitation in Mind
Google Trends only shows search interest, not actual sales data. Combine it with your own judgment and, if possible, a small test campaign — as covered in our Facebook Ads guide, testing real audience response with a small budget is the most reliable approach.
This tool pairs well with the rest of the tools in our free tools list — together they cover both research and execution.
